PCB to Slap Financial Penalties on Players Following T20 World Cup Debacle

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is set to impose financial penalties on players for their dismal performance in the recently concluded T20 World Cup, with sources suggesting the fine could reach PKR 5 million (approximately $18,000) per member.

The decision comes in the wake of Pakistan's premature exit from the Super Eight stage of the tournament, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka. The team managed just one win—against Sri Lanka—while suffering defeats against arch-rivals India and England, with their match against New Zealand washed out.

A reliable PCB source confirmed that disciplinary action is under consideration, though no final decision has been reached. "It is being debated whether hitting the players financially would be the right step," the source told PTI.

However, other insiders claim the board has already decided on a PKR 5 million fine per player, reflecting mounting frustration within both the PCB and government circles over repeated failures in major tournaments.

"The feeling is enough is enough. These players, despite so much backing, let down the nation in big events," a source added.

Players returned home quietly in small groups from Sri Lanka, with captain Salman Ali Agha and star batter Babar Azam landing in Lahore on Sunday night. Those with central contracts currently receive monthly retainers, match fees, win bonuses, and shares in sponsorship deals—benefits now potentially at risk.
