Startup Maha Rathi: A Game-Changer for Entrepreneurs
The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), in collaboration with Avaana Capital, LetsVenture, Karnataka Digital Economy Mission (KDEM), IVCA, HDFC, and others, has introduced the Startup Maha Rathi challenge. This initiative aims to support startups across 11 key sectors, including AI & Deeptech, BioTech & Healthnet, Gaming & Sports, Fintech, Mobility, Agritech, Precision Manufacturing, D2C, Climate Tech, Defence & SpaceTech, and Incubators & Accelerators.
With a prize pool of up to ₹30 crore, this challenge offers budding entrepreneurs financial grants, expert mentorship, and global investor networking opportunities. Special awards are also designated for innovative startups from emerging states and union territories to encourage regional entrepreneurship.
Support Structure and Selection Process
Selected startups will benefit from a structured, multi-phase process, gaining exposure to global markets through Startup India and mentorship from industry veterans. The competition follows a four-step selection process, beginning with the application launch on February 26, 2025, and culminating in an exclusive live pitching finale from April 3-5, 2025, at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi.
Funding Distribution:
- Startups shortlisted for the grand jury round will receive a guaranteed ₹1 lakh.
- The top two startups from each sector will be awarded ₹10 lakh each.
- The next five will receive ₹5 lakh each.
- An additional five startups per sector will gain access to ₹3 lakh each.
The selection jury comprises 100+ leading venture capitalists, angel investors, and domain experts from organizations such as Avaana Capital, LetsVenture, KDEM, IVCA, and HDFC, ensuring a rigorous and impactful evaluation.
Government and Industry Leaders’ Support
Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, Shri Piyush Goyal, emphasized that Startup Maha Rathi is a crucial step toward achieving Viksit Bharat 2047, driving innovation and transformative change in India’s entrepreneurial landscape.
Shri Amardeep Singh Bhatia, Secretary, DPIIT, highlighted India’s startup ecosystem reaching an inflection point, with initiatives like this playing a pivotal role in shaping disruptive entrepreneurs.
Shri Sanjiv, Joint Secretary, DPIIT, reiterated the mission to bridge the gap between startups and investors, ensuring a structured and high-impact platform for showcasing innovations.
Industry leaders such as Anjali Bansal, Founding Partner of Avaana Capital, and Prashant Prakash, Founding Partner of Accel, stressed the importance of catalytic support for startups working in critical sectors like sustainability, energy transition, and deep tech. They emphasized that Startup Maha Rathi is an opportunity to identify and invest in ventures that have the potential to drive India’s economic transformation.
Application Process and Eligibility
Applications for Startup Maha Rathi 2025 open on February 26, 2025, with a deadline of March 8, 2025. The selection process includes:
- Initial screening
- Virtual presentations to a jury panel (March 15-25, 2025)
- Final live pitching event (April 3-5, 2025)
Eligible startups must be DPIIT-recognized, in their early or growth stages, and registered as a Private Limited Company, LLP, or Partnership Firm in India. Applications can be submitted through the official Startup India website.
