Under the provision of the Aadhaar Act, UIDAI was established as a statutory authority. It was created with an objective to issue Unique Identification numbers (UID), named as "Aadhaar", to all residents of India. The UID had to be (a) robust enough to eliminate duplicate and fake identities, and (b) verifiable and authenticable in an easy, cost-effective way. UADAI has opened 28 Aadhaar Seva Kendras (ASK) as a part of its plan to open 114 standalone Aadhaar Enrolments and update Centres across the country. These are additional centres to about 38,000 Aadhaar enrolment centres that are run by Banks, Post Office and State Governments. These centres have catered to more than three lakh residents.
