Perplexity’s Leap: $20B Valuation and $34.5B Chrome Bid

AI search startup Perplexity is on a steep upward trajectory, currently raising a funding round that would value the company at $20 billion post-money. This milestone comes just a month after securing an $18 billion valuation and represents a dramatic rise from $520 million at the start of 2024, making it one of the fastest-growing valuations in the AI sector.

The company has drawn investment from SoftBank, Nvidia, and Jeff Bezos, whose backing has strengthened market confidence. Perplexity’s annual recurring revenue (ARR) now exceeds $150 million, up from about $35 million a year earlier, reflecting rapid adoption of its AI-powered search and information services.

Before its headline-making move, Perplexity had been assessing acquisitions of smaller browser companies to enhance market presence and acquire key technology assets. These exploratory steps set the stage for a far bolder initiative—the $34.5 billion unsolicited all-cash bid for Google’s Chrome browser. The offer, nearly double Perplexity’s own valuation, arrives amid intense antitrust scrutiny on Google, which could theoretically lead to Chrome being spun off.

While many analysts view the bid as a long shot, its timing is calculated. The move could give Perplexity a foothold in one of the internet’s most widely used platforms, significantly boosting its influence. Some industry observers believe CEO Aravind Srinivas may be leveraging the bid primarily to elevate the company’s global profile and signal ambition to investors, partners, and competitors.

Even if the acquisition does not proceed, Perplexity’s surge in valuation, high-profile investor base, and willingness to take risks have established it as a formidable player in AI-powered search. Its aggressive approach signals intent to compete directly with the largest technology companies and expand into broader web services, cementing its reputation as an emerging disruptor.
