GeM has been established to facilitate online procurement of common use Goods & Services required by various Government Departments / Organisations / PSUs. It was created with an objective to provide transparency, efficiency and speed in public procurement. It provides the tools of e-bidding, reverse e-auction and demand aggregation to facilitate the government users, achieve the best value for their money. GeM is a contactless, paperless and cashless online marketplace.

The B2B e-commerce marketplace has surpassed the mark of 10 lakh sellers within four-and-a-half years of its launch. The Government eMarketplace (GeM), as of January 27, 2020, listed 10,13,448 sellers and service providers across over 13,000 product and 178 service categories, according to the data sourced from the marketplace.
