Instagram’s introduction of a new location-sharing feature has raised privacy concerns, prompting platform head Adam Mosseri to clarify its safeguards. The feature enables users to share their real-time location but has drawn criticism from advocates worried about misuse and the potential exposure of sensitive information.
Mosseri, posting on Meta-owned Threads, stressed that location sharing is off by default. Users must opt in to activate it, with full control over when and with whom their location is shared. He emphasized the feature’s goal is to strengthen connections, not compromise safety.
According to Instagram, the tool aligns with its broader privacy policies, offering clear permissions and customizable settings. While geotagging posts and stories has long been available, this update adds live location capabilities, similar to WhatsApp and other Meta apps.
Critics caution that even with opt-in settings, live location sharing could pose risks for young users, public figures, or those in vulnerable situations. Security experts warn of possible exploitation for stalking, harassment, or other malicious activities if used without caution.
