Meta Doubles Offer for 24-Year-Old AI Prodigy Matt Deitke

Meta has reportedly extended a staggering $250 million (≈ ₹2,200 crore) four-year compensation package to 24-year-old AI researcher Matt Deitke after he rejected an initial $125 million (≈ ₹1,000 crore) offer. The revised deal, which includes $100 million in the first year contingent on performance and stock value, highlights the fierce competition for top AI talent.

Deitke, a former University of Washington Ph.D. student who left the program, rose to prominence at the Allen Institute for AI, where he led the development of the multimodal chatbot Molmo. His contributions earned him an Outstanding Paper Award at NeurIPS 2022. Deitke later co-founded Vercept, an AI startup that secured $16.5 million in funding.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg personally intervened after Deitke declined the initial offer, meeting with him to finalize the doubled package. This move underscores Meta’s aggressive push to dominate AI innovation, with the company allocating $72 billion in 2025 for AI-related investments and over $1 billion already spent on recruiting top researchers.

The escalating AI talent war has sparked debate, with critics highlighting concerns over income inequality and potential job displacement driven by such high-stakes compensation packages. Deitke’s recruitment reflects the growing value of elite AI researchers in shaping the future of technology.
