Microsoft Deepens Bet on Anthropic’s AI

Microsoft is significantly ramping up its investment and commercial push around Anthropic’s AI models, signaling a broader shift in how the software giant is hedging its AI strategy beyond OpenAI. The company is not only increasing spending to support Anthropic’s models on Azure, but is also actively incentivizing its cloud sales teams to promote these models to enterprise customers.

At the core of the move is diversification. While Microsoft remains OpenAI’s largest backer, the AI market is evolving rapidly, with enterprises demanding greater choice, resilience, and alignment with safety and compliance standards. Anthropic’s Claude models, known for their emphasis on safety, controllability, and enterprise-friendly behavior, offer Microsoft an attractive complementary option.
