OpenAI is preparing to establish a massive data centre in India with a planned capacity of at least 1 gigawatt (GW), according to Bloomberg reports. The project will form part of the company’s ambitious Stargate initiative, aimed at building some of the world’s largest AI-ready infrastructure hubs.
The company is actively seeking local partners, though specifics on the site and timeline have not yet been disclosed. Formal details are expected during CEO Sam Altman’s visit to India in September, signaling a milestone in OpenAI’s deepening engagement with one of its fastest-growing markets.
India, already OpenAI’s second-largest user base, has been central to the company’s global growth. Earlier this year, OpenAI registered as a legal entity in the country and announced plans to open its first office in New Delhi.
The Stargate program—announced as a $500 billion private-sector investment led by OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank with support from the U.S. government—aims to create an unprecedented global network of AI supercomputing facilities. If realized, the India site would rank among the largest AI-focused data centres worldwide, strengthening Asia’s role in the AI infrastructure race.
Further announcements are expected in the coming weeks as Altman outlines OpenAI’s roadmap for India.
