Teams to Auto-Share Office Location in 2026

Microsoft is preparing to roll out a new Microsoft Teams feature in March 2026 that will automatically update a user’s work location when they connect to their organization’s Wi-Fi network.

According to the Microsoft 365 Roadmap, when employees join corporate Wi-Fi, Teams will detect the building and reflect that location in their work status. The feature will be off by default, with tenant administrators deciding whether to enable it and require user opt-in.

While positioned as a collaboration enhancement—making it easier to coordinate in-person meetings—the move raises privacy concerns. Real-time location visibility could allow colleagues to track each other’s movements across office spaces as devices connect to different Wi-Fi access points.

More significantly, employers could potentially use the feature to monitor compliance with hybrid work policies. It may offer insight into who is working from the office, who remains remote, and even approximate arrival times. For organizations enforcing return-to-office mandates, this tool could evolve into a policy enforcement mechanism.

The feature is currently marked “in development” for global rollout across Windows and macOS in March 2026, following earlier delays from December 2025 and February 2026.

As workplace surveillance tools expand, the balance between operational efficiency and employee privacy is once again under scrutiny.
