UN Launches Two Initiatives to Foster Responsible AI Development

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has announced two major initiatives to strengthen global cooperation and ensure the responsible development of artificial intelligence (AI).

The first is the establishment of the UN Independent International Scientific Panel on AI, which will bring together global experts to provide independent, science-based guidance. The panel will focus on promoting transparency in AI ethics, assessing evolving risks, and advising on potential benefits. Its implementation is expected to begin in 2026.

The second initiative, the Global Dialogue on AI Governance, will serve as a structured forum for multi-stakeholder collaboration. Governments, civil society, industry, and academia will participate to create aligned frameworks on AI regulations, ethics, and norms across borders.

Both initiatives form part of the broader AI for Good program, spearheaded by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and UN partners. This movement focuses on using AI to advance the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

To support these efforts, the UN has also launched an AI Hub under its International Computing Centre (UNICC). The hub will provide an AI Sandbox for testing, alongside an AI Academy for knowledge-sharing and capacity building.

Together, these initiatives reinforce the UN’s commitment to promoting ethical, inclusive, and globally beneficial AI innovation.
