YouTube Launches AI Tool to Combat Deepfakes

YouTube has officially launched its AI-driven Likeness Detection tool, enabling creators in the YouTube Partner Program to identify and remove deepfake content that mimics their face or voice without consent. Following pilot tests with the Creative Artists Agency (CAA), the rollout marks the first global implementation of large-scale AI likeness verification—an important milestone in combating digital impersonation.

Accessible via a new “Likeness” tab in YouTube Studio, the tool requires users to verify their identity with a photo ID and selfie video. Once verified, creators can access a dashboard showing AI-detected videos that feature their likeness and request removal under YouTube’s privacy or copyright policies.

The system functions similarly to Content ID, but focuses on human likeness rather than intellectual property. It allows creators to control participation, with data scanning halted if they opt out. This launch follows several high-profile AI misuse cases, including the unauthorized cloning of YouTuber Jeff Geerling’s voice to market products.

The move underscores YouTube’s escalating efforts against synthetic media abuse, arriving alongside support for the NO FAKES Act, proposed to criminalize deceptive digital replicas. Analysts view it as a major step toward reinforcing digital authenticity, trust, and ethics in an era where generative AI increasingly blurs the boundary between human and machine identity.
