‘Digital Arrest’ Scam Claims Life of Hyderabad Doctor, Two Arrested

A retired doctor’s tragic death in Hyderabad has exposed the deadly consequences of a growing cyber fraud trend — the “digital arrest” scam. Two suspects have been arrested for duping the victim of ₹6.6 lakh and subjecting her to severe psychological torture.

The fraud began with WhatsApp calls from scammers posing as police officers. Using fake FIRs and fabricated documents, they falsely accused the doctor of criminal involvement. To avoid a supposed arrest, she was forced into a “digital detention,” kept under continuous video surveillance, and coerced to transfer her savings.

The psychological trauma of constant intimidation and financial loss led to her emotional collapse. Despite her family’s efforts, she succumbed to distress soon after.

Hyderabad Cybercrime Police traced digital transactions to arrest two suspects linked to a larger interstate fraud network targeting senior citizens. Officials described the case as “a crime that cost a life.”

Experts warn that such scams are spreading fast across India, with criminals exploiting fear and authority. Cybercrime specialist Prof. Triveni Singh urged immediate awareness campaigns and stronger digital policing.

Authorities advise citizens to verify any arrest-related calls and report threats to cybercrime helplines without delay.
